The Jimsar Shale Oil Demonstration Zone, located in Xinjiang's Jimsar County, has achieved a significant production breakthrough, with annual output exceeding 1.7 million tonnes (approximately 12.46 million barrels). This zone, covering 1,278 square kilometres, is China's first national-level shale oil demonstration zone and is estimated to contain over 1 billion tonnes (roughly 7.33 billion barrels) of shale oil resources.

Operational Scale and Growth

Operated by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), the zone has a cumulative output to date of more than 5.3 million tonnes (about 38.85 million barrels). Since its establishment in 2020, development has been rapid, with 472 new wells drilled and 451 wells subjected to fracking. This activity has driven a dramatic increase in annual production from 116,000 tonnes (about 850,280 barrels) in 2019 to the current level of 1.7 million tonnes.

Strategic Importance and Technological Breakthrough

The development is part of China's broader push to advance shale oil production to counter declines from mature oil fields, with two other national-level demonstration zones established in Heilongjiang and Shandong provinces. CNPC states that the Jimsar zone represents a major breakthrough in overcoming three key challenges in continental shale oil extraction: identifying high-potential "sweet spots," effectively modifying the reservoir, and achieving commercially viable development.

Innovations and Future Application

Technological innovations pioneered at the demonstration zone have significantly enhanced well performance. These innovations have increased the estimated full life-cycle output of a single well from 24,000 tonnes (about 176,000 barrels) to 36,000 tonnes (approximately 264,000 barrels). CNPC indicates that the successful technological framework developed at Jimsar is expected to be extended and applied to other shale oil developments across China.
