QatarEnergy's Expansion and Strategic Agreements

QatarEnergy has set a goal to more than double its global liquefied natural gas portfolio, aiming to increase capacity from the current 77 million tonnes per annum to 160 million tpa by 2030. To achieve this expansion, the company is actively securing long-term supply agreements with customers in key markets, particularly in Asia and Europe.

Long-Term Supply Agreement with Jera

The company has signed a significant 27-year sales and purchase agreement with Japan's Jera. This contract stipulates the supply of up to 3 million tpa of LNG, with deliveries scheduled to commence in 2028. The agreement was formalized during the LNG 2026 conference in Doha.

Emergency Supply Framework for Japan

In a separate move to bolster its presence in the Asian market, QatarEnergy entered into a memorandum of understanding with Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry and Jera. This MoU establishes a framework for QatarEnergy to provide Japan with additional LNG quantities during emergency situations. The agreement is designed to address unforeseen events such as natural disasters that could impact Japan's energy supply. It includes mechanisms for bilateral consultation to determine appropriate response measures, ensuring supplemental supplies are activated during emergencies and supply disruptions. The specific financial and volumetric terms of both the long-term SPA and the emergency supply arrangements were not disclosed.
