The seismic acquisition campaign on Block Area OFF-1 offshore Uruguay has commenced, operated by Chevron and with partner Sintana Energy holding a 40% non-operated interest. The campaign follows Chevron's farm-in to a 60% operating stake, which includes financing the program's anticipated $37.5 million cost.

Survey Details and Timeline

The 3D seismic survey, covering approximately 4300 square kilometres, is being conducted by contractor Viridien using the vessel BGP Prospector. The acquisition is planned over two seasons: from February to April 2026, and from November 2026 to April 2027. Work on the area most relevant to key prospects is expected to be completed in the first season, with fast-track results targeted for the fourth quarter of this year.

Regulatory and Environmental Approvals

The start of operations followed a Uruguayan court's rejection of activist groups' efforts to halt the program. Subsequently, the Environment Ministry issued a permit for the survey, conditional on specific mitigation and monitoring measures. These conditions focus on protecting marine mammals and managing potential disruption to commercial fishing.

Environmental Safeguards and Monitoring

The permit mandates several protective measures, including continuous acoustic monitoring to verify underwater noise levels and the presence of marine fauna observers on the survey vessel. It establishes buffer distances and requires operations to halt when whales, dolphins, or other sensitive species are detected, with expanded safeguards for species like sea lions and marine turtles. The Ministry will maintain direct oversight of the seismic operations. The permit was granted after the ministry reviewed a detailed outline of planned works and protective measures submitted by Viridien.
