Chevron Licenses Surfactant Technology to ZL Chemicals for Enhanced Oil Recovery

Chevron has entered into a licensing agreement with Canada-based ZL Chemicals to commercialize its proprietary chemical surfactant technology for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Under the deal, ZL Chemicals will market Chevron’s surfactants under its Vantis brand, targeting operators in shale and tight reservoirs to improve recovery rates and extend asset life. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Technology and Application

Chevron has already applied these surfactants in its own unconventional reservoirs, notably in the Permian Basin. At the SPE Permian Basin Energy Conference in November, a Chevron official reported promising early results for oil recovery rates, though specific chemical compositions remain proprietary. The surfactants work by reducing surface tension between water and oil when injected with water, enabling oil droplets to flow more efficiently through rock formations.

Strategic Significance

Ryder Booth, Chevron’s chief technology and engineering officer, emphasized that advanced chemicals are a key differentiator for Chevron, and this licensing agreement allows ZL Chemicals to scale and broaden market access. ZL President Echo Liu expressed enthusiasm for supporting operators in enhancing recovery across various reservoir types. ZL Chemicals operates facilities in the US, China, and Oman.
