Corcel's Strategic Exploration Plans in Angola's Kwanza Basin

Richard Lane, chief operations officer of London-listed junior Corcel, outlined the company's ambitious exploration strategy for Angola's onshore Kwanza basin during an exploration panel at Upstream's Global Development & Decarbonisation Week 2026. The company aims to drill a high-impact exploration well by mid-2027, targeting a substantial pre-salt prospect on its KON 16 block.

Technical Foundation and Data Analysis

Corcel operates three blocks in the onshore portion of this historically neglected basin. The company has conducted extensive analysis of vintage and newly acquired seismic data, along with information from legacy wells, to develop a comprehensive understanding of its acreage before initiating drilling operations. Lane emphasized that the initial probe on the KON 16 block is expected within the next 12 months, with ongoing discussions with potential farminees.

Geological Potential and Prospect Characteristics

The KON 16 block contains multiple prospects divided into pre-salt and shallower post-salt targets, with the potential to drill both plays using a single well. Corcel's primary target is a pre-salt structure named Sirius. Lane noted that structural features in the block are similar to major pre-salt discoveries in Brazil and deepwater Angola, with recoverable reserves potentially reaching hundreds of millions of barrels per prospect. The company recently completed high-resolution 2D seismic data acquisition to image the deeper pre-salt, which proved successful.

Strategic Advantages and Geological Context

Lane highlighted that the onshore Kwanza basin contains the same formations as the offshore portion where Cobalt made significant oil, gas, and condensate discoveries 10-15 years ago, now being developed by TotalEnergies as part of its deepwater Kaminho project. He emphasized that the same geological timings, environments, and structure sizes exist onshore, providing confidence that this represents systematic, data-driven exploration in a proven system rather than a wildcat gamble.

Historical Context and Modern Application

Post-salt exploration wells were drilled in the onshore Kwanza basin during the 1950s-1960s, largely based on surface geology, leading to discoveries. Oilfields were developed and produced in the 1970s but were shut-in during Angola's civil war starting in 1975. Lane explained that Corcel is examining the same working petroleum system with modern 21st-century technology, noting that while most onshore basins have been extensively explored, this area contains legacy data proving hydrocarbon existence without modern exploration.
