Australian gas company Denison Gas has announced one of the largest onshore east coast gas discoveries in at least a decade, located in the Baffle Creek field within the Denison trough of Queensland’s Bowen basin. The initial estimate places the potential scale at 566 petajoules (approximately 539 billion cubic feet) of contingent and prospective wet gas resources. This success has prompted the operator to double its gas processing plant and condensate storage capacity over the next year.

Strategic Importance for Queensland

Queensland Natural Resources & Mines Minister Dale Last stated that the development could open a new gas hub for the state in the Bowen basin, potentially replicating the success of the Surat basin. The discovery is already supplying natural gas and liquid fuels into the domestic market. Denison’s recent four-well exploration campaign confirmed vast tight gas resources in deep sandstone reservoirs, with the company connecting pilot wells to a commercial pipeline network to reduce emissions instead of flaring.

Technical Details and Resource Estimates

The Baffle Creek 7 well, one of the state’s longest tight gas horizontal wells, has been completed. Fracture stimulation (fracking) and testing are scheduled for the third quarter, with gas to be connected into nearby pipelines for the east coast market. The independent resource estimate of 566 petajoules, from consultancy Netherland, Sewell & Associates, is based on the first three wells of the program, with the new well expected to provide an uplift. Denison’s executive chairman Xingjin Wang noted that this volume could power every Queensland home for five years and begin flowing to industrial users by year’s end.
