New Director General Appointed for EU Energy Directorate

Celine Gauer, a long-serving European Commission professional since 1994 and an experienced violoncellist with a Brussels orchestra, has been appointed as the new director general of the European Commission's Energy Directorate, effective 1 June. She succeeds Ditte Jul Jorgensen, who will transition to the role of Director General for Trade.

Background and Career Path

Gauer joined the European Commission in May 1994 as a policy officer and has progressively advanced through the ranks while based in Brussels. A French national, she holds a master of laws degree from Sorbonne University in Paris. Prior to this appointment, she served as Director General of the Reform & Investment Task Force. Additionally, according to her biography on the EC website, she was a founding member of the Bruocsella Symphonic Orchestra in Brussels.

Energy Directorate Responsibilities

The Energy Directorate oversees the European Union's energy policy, which is centered on delivering secure, sustainable, and affordable energy for all member states. Key priorities include investing in clean energy, making energy affordable for households and companies, and ensuring access to secure and diversified energy supplies. A specific focus is eliminating Europe's dependency on Russian fossil fuels.

Leadership Continuity

Dan Jorgensen remains in his position as EC energy commissioner, with his term scheduled to expire in 2029, ensuring continuity in the political leadership of the energy portfolio alongside the new administrative head.
