Japan Petroleum Exploration (Japex) has initiated a new exploration drilling operation offshore Hidaka in Hokkaido, aiming to assess a potentially significant natural gas resource. This activity is notable given Japan's heavy reliance on imported energy, with only one other producing offshore field currently in operation.

The new well is located five kilometers from a discovery well drilled in 2019 in water depths of 1,070 meters.
