Overview of New L-Class Vessels

Netherlands-based Jumbo has ordered two state-of-the-art heavy lift vessels from China's Dajin Heavy Industry, with delivery scheduled for 2028 and 2029. These new L-Class vessels are designed to meet evolving market demands for heavier lifting capabilities combined with larger cargo capacities, targeting multiple sectors including oil and gas, offshore wind, mining, and specialized marine work.

Key Design and Technical Features

Each 25,000 deadweight tonne L-Class vessel is energy efficient and methanol-ready, developed in-house by Jumbo. They will be equipped with two Huisman 1200-tonne heavy lift cranes, a significant upgrade from Jumbo's current dedicated vessels—Fairplayer and Jumbo Javelin—which each feature a pair of 900-tonne capacity cranes. The new DNV-classed design also includes high deck strength, a large open deck area, substantial cargo capacity, and a deep cargo hold.

Fleet and Strategic Context

These vessels will join the JSI Alliance fleet, a commercial partnership established between Jumbo and Germany's SAL Heavy Lift in 2021. The alliance expanded in 2024 with the addition of SAL Intermarine, creating a combined fleet of over 80 vessels. Jumbo CEO Peter de Bree noted that this fleet development brings new energy to the organization and will create valuable opportunities for clients and partners worldwide.

Industrial Collaboration

Dajin Heavy Industry stated that this contract marks the beginning of a long-term industrial collaboration, with potential for broader cooperation across offshore vessel construction, offshore wind engineering, and deep-sea equipment services.
