Legacy Offshore Fields Drive Congo Production Growth

Mature offshore fields in the Republic of Congo are experiencing renewed production optimization, driven by independent operators investing in brownfield redevelopment projects. Ammat Global Resources has boosted production capacity at the Loango and Zatchi fields from approximately 4,000 bopd to 7,000 bopd through workovers, infrastructure upgrades, and reservoir management initiatives aimed at slowing natural decline rates and improving efficiency.

Key upgrades include enhancements to electrical submersible pumping systems, subsea infrastructure, and flow assurance systems, as well as improvements linking offshore platforms to the main treatment hub to reduce bottlenecks and stabilize throughput. The redevelopment strategy prioritizes rehabilitation of existing infrastructure and optimization of producing wells over large frontier exploration campaigns.

The Republic of Congo is pursuing higher offshore production levels to support government revenues and maintain its regional position among oil producers. Ammat has also expanded associated gas utilization at the Loango hub, redirecting gas to onsite power generation to reduce diesel consumption and limit routine flaring.

NJ Ayuk, executive chairman of the African Energy Chamber, emphasized that mature offshore fields offer opportunities for production growth through operational improvements and infrastructure upgrades. He stated that Africa’s energy future relies on unlocking the full potential of existing assets, not solely on new discoveries. Across Africa, divestment of mature offshore assets by international operators is creating opportunities for smaller independent companies to acquire and redevelop producing fields. Ayuk noted that mature fields should be viewed as opportunities to be optimized, not liabilities.

These developments offshore Congo highlight a growing industry focus on brownfield optimization and mature asset management as operators seek lower-cost pathways to maintain or expand production levels.
