Equinor's Commitment to Bay du Nord Project

Premier Tony Wakeham of Newfoundland & Labrador expressed strong confidence in Equinor's continued commitment to the Bay du Nord project, following BP's withdrawal from the US$10 billion development. Wakeham stated that the project is progressing as planned, with regulatory, technical, and procurement activities on schedule. Equinor, now the full owner, has reaffirmed its dedication to safe, responsible development and is advancing toward a final investment decision in early 2027. Wakeham described this as "a strong vote of confidence" in the project, the province, and its offshore potential, highlighting opportunities for thousands of jobs, local business growth, and long-term economic benefits.

Provincial Government and Industry Support

Wakeham emphasized that the provincial government strongly advocates for Bay du Nord, viewing it as one of the province's most important economic opportunities. He noted that Equinor is willing to take on the project independently, without seeking a partner, and is exploring improved efficiencies that could potentially accelerate the schedule. Energy NL, a trade body representing oil and gas players, also viewed Equinor's full ownership as a positive step toward project sanction, citing significant recent progress and a clear commitment from the operator.

Environmental Concerns and Viability Questions

In contrast, Sierra Club Canada (SCC) argued that BP's exit raises serious questions about the project's viability. SCC stated that if BP does not see Bay du Nord as a good investment, it serves as a warning against public investment and the project's overall feasibility. The organization contended that BP's departure demonstrates the project is not viable and called for a rapid build-out of renewable transmission infrastructure in Newfoundland & Labrador instead.
