Petrobras is advancing its drilling campaign in Brazil's northern equatorial margin, with the Morpho exploration well in the Foz do Amazonas basin expected to reach its reservoir within weeks. Drilling operations recently cleared a complex zone, and the well is currently at approximately 5,000 meters depth, targeting a reservoir at depths slightly beyond 6,000 meters, with a final depth of about 7,000 meters in nearly 3,000 meters of water. This makes Morpho one of the five deepest wells ever drilled by the company.

Operational Progress and Challenges

Drilling began in October 2025 after years of licensing efforts. On January 4, a leak of about 18,440 liters of synthetic fluid occurred from two auxiliary lines connecting the drillship ODN II to the well. Repairs were completed, and drilling resumed in early February. The operation is conducted in six phases, currently in the fifth phase after crossing an "abnormal pressure zone" that required extreme caution. The company is approximately 1,000 meters from the reservoir and is awaiting results to assess potential.

Future Drilling Plans

Depending on Morpho's results, Petrobras may drill two contingent wells in Block FZA-M-59. Regardless of the outcome, after concluding Morpho, the drillship ODN II will move to spud the Mae de Ouro wildcat in Block POT-M-762 in the Potiguar basin, also in the northern equatorial margin. Petrobras has requested authorization from Ibama to bring a second drilling rig, the Amaralina Star, to expedite operations across six blocks with eight wells to drill. Even if Morpho and Mae de Ouro are unsuccessful, the company has multiple mapped prospects for future drilling in the region, which includes the Foz do Amazonas, Para-Maranhao, Ceara, Barreirinhas, and Potiguar basins.

Exploration Strategy

Petrobras emphasizes that exploration requires analyzing multiple wells to accurately assess an area's potential, rather than relying on a single well. The company is committed to a systematic evaluation of the northern equatorial margin's prospects.
