Libya's state-owned National Oil Corporation (NOC) has announced a series of exploration successes across the country, including onshore oil and gas discoveries and offshore gas flow test results, which are significant for the hydrocarbon-reliant nation.

Onshore Discoveries in the Ghadames and Murzuq Basins

In the onshore Ghadames basin, Algerian state company Sonatrach discovered oil and gas with its A1-69/02 exploration well. The well, drilled to 8,440 feet, tested at a flow rate of 13 million cubic feet per day of gas and 327 barrels per day of condensate. This well is part of an eight-well commitment under a 2028 Exploration & Production Sharing Agreement (EPSA) involving Sonatrach, Oil India, and Indian Oil Corporation. Separately, Sirte Oil Company recently reported an oil discovery in the same basin, with its B1 well flowing over 2,000 barrels per day.

In the Murzuq basin, Repsol made an oil discovery with its C1-4/130 exploration well. Drilled to 4,325 feet, the well produced an average of 763 barrels of oil per day. This well is the fifth of eight required under a 2008 EPSA, and Repsol's technical teams are evaluating the next steps.

Offshore Gas Results and Chevron Interest

Offshore, NOC reported test results from Eni's C1-16/4 exploration well on the Bahr Essalam South (BESS) prospect. The well, drilled to 10,458 feet, underwent two tests: one flowing 14 million cubic feet per day of gas and a second at 24 million cubic feet per day. This well fulfills contractual obligations for Block D under a 2008 agreement. Eni had previously reported that two wells on the prospect discovered over 1 trillion cubic feet of gas in-place.

Separately, Chevron has signed a memorandum of understanding with NOC to conduct a technical study of offshore Area NC 146. This follows Chevron's successful bid in Libya's licensing round last year.
