SLB has secured multiple offshore drilling services contracts from Mubadala Energy for the Tangkulo natural gas field development in Indonesian waters. The scope of work encompasses drilling, completion, and testing services for the full life cycles of the wells.

Field Significance and Location

The Tangkulo field is a major natural gas discovery located in the Andaman Sea, approximately 65 kilometres from the northern part of Sumatra Island. Announced in 2024, the discovery holds reserves of more than 2 trillion cubic feet of gas and has significantly boosted industry interest in the frontier Andaman basin. Energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie has referred to the Tangkulo discovery as the new "sweetheart" of Indonesia's exploration sector.

Development Timeline

First gas from the Tangkulo field is anticipated by the end of 2028. As of late 2025, Mubadala Energy was reported to be fast-tracking the proposed Plan of Development for the project.
